Mldonkey ext

Jump to: navigation, search

This is the UDP port you must open to receive all client <-> server UDP traffic, including UDP sources searching, eXtended Searches, UDP pings, and the MLdonkey style sources propagation.

It is port + 4, since port is usually 4662, 4662 + 4 = 4666

MLdonkey style sources propagation is still in use, but is to be replaced by the eMule extention for sources propagation. Expect this to be depreceated soon. The old way can be disabled by setting "sources_propagation = false", as this doesn't affect eMule style sources propagation.

Why? The eMule way is much better suited. The MLdonkey way was developed when it was still the only alternative client out there, and because sources propagation did not yet exist (nor would the eDonkey2000 developers have listened to its users to add it). For this reason, MLdonkey chose to "spoof" server packets to send its sources to the original client users (yes, from where the witchunters came) that just needed to set their UDP port correctly (it's normally randomly picked). This worked sometimes, but most of the time, because of firewalls and other factors, the good intention behind this was in vain. The eMule method is an ask-reply scheme, now useful for the many non-original client users out there.
